Fs Pat SE TTBS REE SIE CNP R IOS Help arrives for teens STRESSED OUT TEN YEARS ago one of the most serious concerns for high school seniors was whether they would get a date for the prom. Times have changed -— today some seniors are having to work after school hours to pay their rent and food bills. Teacher Judy Ferris says it's these students in particular she would like to reach through her adolescent stress course, offered through the North Shore Family Services. “‘More and more kids are deal- ing with adult issues,”’ she said. “I was appalled last year to find many of my Grade 12 students were struggling to live on their own. They had part-time jobs in order to pay the rent. One student work- ed from 3:30 p.m. to midnight to support herself. She often didn’t make it to her first class in the morning and in May, when she should have been doing school assignments and studying for final exams, she was evicted. ‘*There are many like her whose first priority is survival, not school. I think we, as adults, need to be aware of the incredible toad these teens are carrying and to be there for them in a supportive, car- ing way.” Ferris hopes her program will be able to help some of these stu- dents. The course, to be offered Wednesdays after school at Carson Graham Secondary School, will offer stress management tech- niques and an opportunity to build a support group. North Shore Family Services is also offering another course for teenagers this winter — on asser- tiveness training. Education program coordinator Claudia Webber said she believes the North Shore is the first to offer such courses for teens in the Lower Mainland. “We're noticing a lot more depression, suicide and apathy happening with teens, and this is our way of recognizing the pro- blem and dealing with it in a posi- tive way,'’ she said. The adolescent stress course costs $10 for six weeks and begins Jan. 21. It is open to any student in grades 10 to 12. Assertiveness training for teens will be held Jan. 20 to Feb. 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $20. Other new courses, offered by North Shore Family Services, this winter are geared towards adults. One such course is called Taking Risks, designed to motivate men and women into trying something new, said Webber. There are also two new courses for mothers. One is entitled Mak- ing the Most of Motherhood, and is intended to help mothers take time out for themselves. There’s also a course dealing with post-partum depression. This course came about after local home care nurses expressed a need for such a course for new mothers. Another new course offered this winter is for women whose rela- tionships with men have been painful and destructive. The course was inspired by’ the best-selling book Women Who Love Too Much.
