District residents have no
cause for concern over li-
quid chlorine production in
the area.

So says Canadian Occidental
Petroleum spokesman Orest
Sackmey.

Reacting to a July 11 B.C. Court
of Appeal decision limiting any
future expansion of his company’s
chlorine production (see story,
page one), Sackmey said, ‘'I guess
council and a lot of citizens are
concerned about the proximity of a
chlorine plant to residential, but in
29 years (of operation here) there
have been no accidents.’’

Sackmey said the plant is about
a % mile away from any residen-
tial area.

North Vancouver District Mayor
Marilyn Baker said COPL has
been a good corporate citizen but
the district is concerned with che
safety of the community.

“With the pressure of urban
build-up we are concerned about
the production of hazardous
substances that could not be site-
contained in the event of an acci-
dent.”

She said she is not aware of any
other Canadian municipalities that
have enacted bylaws to prohibit
the manufacture of hazardous
commodities in its area.

District council will discuss the
situation at an upcoming council
meeting to decide possible future
options.
