Originally, primitive tribes used grotesque make-up to guard themselves against their enemies, However, it was during the early Egyptian period that cosmetics as we know them today were first us- ed. Eye make-up, in particular, was widely used with thick black eyeliner extended out towards the temple to form wings, in the style of Cleopatra. A primitive form of eyeshadow consisted of a thick green ointment painted on the eyelids. This was not only for dec- orative purposes but itlso to pro- vide protection from the harsh sunlight. SUBTLE SOPHISTICATION is the trend in men’s COMPLEX ROUTINE The make-up routines of women such as Cleopatra were long and complicated. First the face and body were massaged with oils, then a yellow foundation —- the fash- tonable color of the day — was painted on the face and neck. Eyebrows were shaved off com- pletely and then painted on above the natural eyebrow line. Face packs were created from weird and wonderful ingredients like whipped ostrich eggs mixed with dough and fresh milk. The Greeks and Romans used cosmetics which were often dan- gerous. To achieve the pale com- plexion which was the desired look at this time, they used white lead photo submitted fashions by Polo/Ralph Lauren. More and more layers were applied and this process eventually destroyed the skin. MAKE-UP CHANGES Elizabeth the Ist made the wear- ing of make-up quite respectable. She went to great lengths to keep her good looks, and started the trend for patches which reached its Shahi sack PRET RAECOESEMIERET nnual peak in the 17th century. And make-up continued to be popular right up until the 19th century. However, during Queen Victoria’s reign, it was only women of ill repute who would be seen wearing cosmetics. The refin- ed ladies of the time took more in- terest in caring for their skin with special treatments, such as sleeping with a slice of raw beef over their face! ou nitive times With the advent of the 20th cen- tury, women once again started to wear make-up such as rouges, crayons to darken lashes, and even discreet lipsticks. And once Hollywood starlets became big news, brighter and bolder cosmctics became fashionable. Today cosmetics and skin care products are an important part of most women's personal care and fashion routines.
