WITH THE economic climate the way it is, small and independent businesses need all the help they can get, and finding relevant informa - tion is often a problem. Large corporations and government agencies often have their own information centres, but small businesses must use any resources open to them. Many independent business people are turning to their local public libraries for help, and the libraries are responding by analysing and updating their business col- lections to meet the new demands. In the Reference Depart- ment at the main Lynn Valley Branch of the North Van- couver District Library, three in-demand business services have recently been added. Contacts Influential is a comprehensive and regularly up-dated directory of businesses in the Lower Mainland, providing a choice of contacts invaluable to marketing personnel. Job- Business services new at NV library seekers also find this direc- tory useful. Also new is the Canadian Small Business Guide a com- pendium of information for the independent business per- son covering the legal aspects of starting a business, employee benefits, labor standards, marketing, per- sonnel and more. In loose- leaf format, this service is up- dated regularly. : The same is true of Butter- worths’ Employment in British Columbia, which ef- fectively summarizes all the legislation on working condi- tions, collective agreements, hiring and firing, health care and disability and retirement and pensions. There are many other ser- vices of this kind available at the library: interested business people are invited to drop by the Reference Department at Lynn Valley to become familiar with them, or to call the library at 984-0286 if they have a specific query. 4 hours can save a life BY INVESTING four hours of your time, you could save a life.
