Al2 - Sunday, May 29, 1983 - North Shore News FROM PAGE A1 ‘favorable. The new park is to be known as Crippen Regional Park, in recognition of the assistance by Glenn Crip- pen, principal of North Hamilton Holdings, the previous owners of the land, in the purchase. It will be developed as a multi-purpose park, offering a wide range of activities in- cluding group camping, picknicking, hiking, cycling and nature study. Visitors will be able to swim and go canoeing at Killarney Lake, surrounded by undeveloped forest land. Though many Bowen Islanders would prefer the island to stay unchanged, most are conscious of the problems that occur on an island which has been almost exclusively residential but which has an ever-increasing number of visitors from the Lower Mainland, with no facilities to cope with them. Past president of Bowen's Chamber of Commerce Peter Schmidt says: “When people come over here and want to camp or picnic we have to tell them ‘there is no place for you.’ And when there is no park they are go- ing to light fires where they are not being watched.” Schmidt says the main concern now of locals is that the park should be carefully ~ controlled and supervised. As president of the Bowen Island Park Association up h until a month ago, Schmidt expresses confidence that such will be the case under _ the administration of the GVRD. “The restrictions are laid — down in our community plan .' and there is no danger of - things getting out of hand,” he assures. Aware that Bowen is building up anyway, he sees the park as a safeguard of green space. “It’s like Stanley Park,” he says. “If someone hadn't ob- tained that land years ago it wouldn't be there today. If we didn't get it now there would not be a park here - and it will improve our quali- ty of life.” John Rich has been involv- ed in the park concept dur- ing the years he was chair- man of the Islands Trust and says of opposition to the move “Some of them are. in- terested in devclopment and there are others who just want to keep the place to themselves “If it was a park just for a few people that would be ideal bul ws) not very reahstic “As chatuman of — the and shopping centres. None of them really had ideas which were compatible with the residents.” Not only will the park be instrumental in cleaning up the island from the regular sight of raw sewage floating out to sea because of the present lack of facilities for weekend visitors, it will also safeguard the island's character, according to Rich. “People can walk off the ferry and be in the park,” he says. “It's right at the ferry site.” “Now we are not going to see these areas logged off and have condominiums and other things put up. “Everybody is aware that the place is growing and will continue to grow and this park is part of the saving of Bowen.” BOWEN ISLAND HOWE SOUND rippen Regiongfl Park \ sy Snug Cove ____. won ne EB EEY. cone ene nrn ry, = oe .
