Audi expands

THE AUDI V8 quattro ex-
pands upon the overall con-
cept with a 32-valve engine;
sophisticated electronic
management of both the
engine and transmission;
quattro ali-wheel-drive
systern combined with an-
ti-lock braking; and an
aerodynamic, fully
galvanized body.

Speed sensitive steering and 215
VR 25 all-weather  steel-belted
tires are now standard equipment.

The 240-horsepower, 32-valve
powerplant with four overhead
cams and tuned intake runners
generates 245 foot-pounds of tor-
que at 4,000 revolutions per
minute. Top track speed is 232
km/h and zero to 100 km/h ac-
celeration is achieved in 8.7 se-
conds, with a four-speed
automatic transmission.

The engine block weighs just 28
kg and utilizes connecting rods
which were specifically designed to
allow the engine block length to
be reduced to approximately 40
cms, This makes it the shortest
available V8 engine in its
displacement class.

A digital engine contro! unit
processes sensor signals and han-
dies all the V8 quattro’s control
functions with precision and
reliability.

suel injection, map-type ignition,
Oxygen sensor contro! and self-
diagnostics.

The power and response of the
V& quattro powerplant are com-
plemented by the new four-speed
automatic ZF® transmission with a
lock-up torque converter, elec-
tronic shifting contro! and three
settings availabie to the driver.

The transmission has three driv-
ing modes: ‘‘E’’ for efficiency and
comfort through early upshifting;
**3”" allows high engine rpm and
full power with the engine pulling
to higher speeds before the unit
snifts for higher performance; and
“*M”’ is for manual gearshifting.
In the “E” and ‘‘S’ modes, full

plemented by the Audi/Bose®
music system which is specifically
tuned to the acoustics of the V8
quattro interior.

In March 1992 Audi will launch
an entirely new range of cars,
predominantly quattro equipped,
and ali designed to deliver the
highest levels of handling and
control in the luxury car segment.
