An old soldier remembers

His name is Ernest John
Body, but everyone calls him
Jack. He was born on
February 28, 1888. “Heavy
on the eights,” he quipped.

In 1915 he joined the
Canadian Mounted Rifles.
He was then sent to France,
where he was needed in the
infantry -—~ they weren't
sending the cavalry to Vimy.

On April 16, 1916, the
Canadian 8th Battalian was
holding the front line at
Vimy. His division pressed
on a mile to Arleux, where
they “dug in” for 24 hours.
The next morning their
Lewis machine gun was
smashed and it became
upperative that they replace
it. Jack remembers softly, “I
got mine (deep shrapnel
wounds in the arm and leg)
while trying to retrieve
another Lewis gun from a
German soldier.”

Ironically 30 years later,
Jack’s son Robin was shot
down from the skies, on the
Somme, 40 miles from that
very spot. Miraculously he
wasn't killed. He was a
navigator in one of the
bombers belonging to the
419 squadron.

Jack thought that Robin
was either dead, or had been
taken prisoner. Mercifully
after three months he
received a telegram saying
that Robin was alive and
well. The Prench pepile had
given him food and managed
to hide him until the
Americans could fly him
safely back to London.

and his son have been back
to visit the compassionate
French people who risked
their lives to give Robin
shelter.

Jack now resides at
Beacon Hill Lodge. He looks
forward to Thursdays when
the Bookmobile comes. His
favorite books are about

Canadian pioneers. He has
been a staunch supporter of
the West Vancouver
Memorial Library for the last
30 years.

At ninety-two years of age
Jack is still proud to be a
member of Branch No. 60 of
the West Vancouver
‘Canadian Legion.
