Raymond Carpenter of Pickwick, _ Minnesota. Carpenter collected: parts from sources in seven states and put them all together in the shape of a 1926 Ford Model T Roadster. He wasn’t letting on just how much the entire venture set him back, but in 1926 the car he built, sold for $360 complete and brand new. It cost Chandler $20 more than that just. to have the engine rebuilt by a Pickwick mechanic. It appears that a large number of car buyers still favour big North American cars, in spite of spiralling fuel costs/shortages and the lot. The big car has been. trimmed down some, of late, and it’s slimmer and lighter edition is now getting better gas mileage ... and a hefty portion of the new car sales market. Since the beginning of the 1979 model year, big cars in North America have accounted for almost 30% of all new cars sold. In this same time period, the small imported auto has been taking a beating, what with currency exchange rates bringing on almost con- tinuous price hikes. The market share for imported cars has fallen dramatically as American manufac- turers’ begin to offer more “internationally” flavored cars. The Lincoln has been the last of the truly BIG cars, but even it is slated for downsizing. The 1980 Lincoln (due. in 6 months or so) is scheduled to be 18 inches shorter overall, and 900 to 1000 pounds lighter. Engines will be smaller too, and will be equipped with electronic fuel injection ... these modifications of course, in the interest of better fuel economy. All of which, as I mentioned in an earlier column, has created an unprecedented demand for this year’s Lincoln, the last of the big ones. me We've got an excellent inventory of 1979 Lincolns, as well as a fair selection of previously owned units, but they're going fast. Like the last American con- vertible of a couple of years back, the Cadillac Eldorado, the 1979 big Lincolns and Continental Mark Vs, in being the last of their breed, have become even more desirable than usual, because now they're _ “Collector's Items”. In fact, a friend of mine is buying one for his personal use and one more to put away in the garage! The 1980 Lincoln (first of the new smaller line) is sure to be a Collector's Item in it’s own right, with it's rumoured aluminum body panels and integral over-— drive transmission, but whether it matches 1979's sales scramble, we'll have to see. Limited numbers of Mark V Designer Editions, Collector’s Series, Continental Town Cars and Town Coupes are available in stock for your perusal (and if youre so inclined ... your in- vestment), but as I say, they won't linger on our display lot long. In the past weeks, I’ve given you brief glimpses into the various facets of our operation, from sales to service, to leasing, to the parts department, but there's one valuable segment of our business I've not in- troduced to you until now, and that’s the Brasso Lincoln-Mercury Collision Repair Department under manager Pred ‘Unger. Fred’s highly skilled staff can perform virtually any bodywork repairs on any make of car, too ... not just the Ford and Datsun lines we specialize in. Whether you've had a nasty shunt in your Buick Riviera, need the trunk lid repainted on your Datsun 510, or would just like a scratch on your new Marquis touched up, give Fred Unger a call.
