WILLIAMS LAKE — Come, let us sit upon a stone and speak of treason and plot, of intrigue, of grand plans gone wrong and great men angry, of boldness and of death. Of course everybody will say that’s the government wl over again, but everybody is wrong. We speak of the affairs at Bell E Acres Golf Club, where the meat and sinew of legend are nurtured, Bell B Acres is the creation of one Jim Lowery, an Irish stub- blejumper from Saskatchewan who quit teaching school to build the place. Ht lies over the western bills above Williams Lake, just out of sight of the Lakeview Hotel and the provincial government build- ing. On the Bell E Acre grounds _ there is a pond, ubout 100 feet long by a 150 fect wide or, as we have learned to say, about 30.48 inetres by 45.72 metres. On other golf courses it would be called a water trap, but Jim had Joftier thoughts. He put goldfish in it, which thrived despite winters where temperatures drop to 40 below. Encouraged by the goldfish, he put two Japanese Coy in the pond. Either the coy were not male and female or they didn't like one another, for zhey never produced young. Their sex no longer matters because a visiting mink ate one of them. Next Mr. Lowery introduced _ rainbow trout, undeterred by the fact that the water hazard has no inlet and no outlet. That is sup- posed to discourage trout. They thrived. . Everybody at Bell E Acres Paul St. Pierre PAULITICS & PERSPECTIVES thrives: men, women, children, fish, dogs and mosquitoes, Because the Rainbows had no running wate: in which to brecd, Mr. Lowery had to introduce new fingerlings cach spring to offset . predation by Great Blue Herons | and minks. However, the pond is believed to yet contain a few monstrous trout from the very first planting who lurk at the bottom daring anybody to find thei, Being so blessed by God and nature, Mr. Lowery spread the joy. In combination with the Williams Lake Lions Ciub, he ar- ranged a fishing derby for the old people who live at Cariboo ‘Lodge. About this time of year a Sun- day is set aside for them and the Lions taxi them out for hotdogs, hamburgers, coffee, lying and fishing in the water trap, Usually everybody catches trout, particularly since Jim stops the daily feeding a day or so before the pensioners come. Enter Tyrant State, represented by Jack Leggett, the region's fisheries biologist. He declared that the trout were allright, the fishing derby was all tight, but the Asians had to go. All that was needed, he said, vas fora couple of ospreys to pick up goldfish, lose them over Williains Lake and a horrendous new pest as evil as the European starling would be let loose in Cariboo. Jim Lowery opposed this on the principle, developed by the Irish race, that if government wants sontething done it must be wrong. “Jack,’' he said,“‘the osprey would have to catch a male goldfish and lose him, then he would have to catch a female and lose her. “tn a lake as big as Williams Lake, he would have to lose them pretty close together or the'd never meet, and even if they met they might be like my Japanese Coy and not like ong another,”’ This statement, which rises from the yeasty ferment of Mr. Lowery’s memary, sums up the’ battle of Leggett and Lowery as it has been fought for nigh three years. : The Bell E Acres manager agreed to poison all the pond, trout, Coy and goldfish together, with Rotenone, a fertilizer which rush fires threaten WV homes WEST VANCOUVER firefighters were called to the scene. of two bush fires Aug. 19° in. the Caulfeild area-of West Vancouver. ° ‘- The fires. were ‘both in. the 4800-block of McKenzie Drive, said Capt. It turns out that Rotenone doesn’t bother goldfish at all, They like it. They can’t under- stand why the other fish don't gobble it up. ‘They say it's an acquired taste, tike Danish blue cheese and some forms of sexual intercourse. Since Rotenone wouldn't do, ‘Mr. Lowery, who had reluctantly agreed that Jack Leggett had a bigger shillclagh than he had, decided on heroic measures. He would dynamite. He found an experienced fish- erman, whom he declines to iden- tify, and told-him to bring some sticks of Chileotin Wobbler lures. They waited uotil the Cariboo Frost King laid a full 18 inches of ice over the pond. Holes were bored. Three sticks were let go, confined beneath the ice. [t registered on seismographs in eg baat Los Angeles and pieces of the ice overtook and passed the Mariner spacecraft between Mars and Mercury. Six people in Williams Lake gave up drinking. Mr. Lowery, who estimates the fish population in the hundreds, went to the massacre scene to count, “We found 12 dead trout and 24 goldfish which were dead or distressed about things. The Coy was fine.” This is a casualty rate not much higher than summer weekend traffic deaths. Mr. Lowery says that he will cooperate with the government people, damn them, and will kill all those goldfish. His plan now is to pump the pond dry and see how they like living without water.
