Ambleside ‘“‘lighting up’’
for Christmas

Coot! Christmas lights will once again be spreading Yuletide cheer throughout Ambleside
this holiday season.

For the past 35 years, Don Fleming, owner of West Van Furniture, and his fellow mer-
chants have been decorating Marine Drive at Christmastime.

The decorations have gone through several phases.

“In the beginning, we used to rent the big ladder from the arena,” recalls Fleming. “We'd
take my truck and string lights all along the 30 poles between 14th Street and 18th Street.”

At one time, merchants hung seven-foot banners up on the poles. For many years, they “|
even put a tree up on top of every store. The metal posts which held the trees up can still

‘be seen poking up from rooftops.

Last year, the merchants chose to keep things simple. They put up a magnificent Christmas
tree in Ambleside Park, aglitter with lights and a sinqle star winking at the top. But no Christmas
lights lit up the main street.

The revitalization of Ambleside caused the merchants to reconsider their decorating plans
for this year. ;

They have decided to complement the mall's “new look” with individually-decorated
storefronts. In addition, they hope to put lights on each of the trees which now line the five
blocks of shopping mall.

Don Fleming has high hopes to incorporate the new lamp standards into a colorful ex-
travaganza for next year’s Christmas season, in a cooperative effort between the local mer-
chants and the District of West Vancouver.

As he says: “They would look perfect with a bell hanging over each pair of lights.”
