“IT has to be painted,”
I declared the very first
time we stepped into
the front hall of the
house. I thought to
myself that this room
definitely has possibili-
ties.

A Craftsman staircase cas-
caded down to the front door
and it was apparent that whomever built the
staircase took pride in their work. As it turned
out, this is one of the rooms I am most proud
of. Ir has a charm unlike any other room in
the house.

Unfortunately, it was saddied with dark
wood and it was absorbing whatever eastern
light it could find. [ needed a palette that
reflected light to put a spark into the wonder-

ful architectural style here.
With our theme to highlight
the house of its Craftsman
heritage we decided to tackle
the paint issue first.
According to Color
Marketing Group, a U.S.
non-profit association of
colour designers who track
color trends, blue is it for the
trend in 2000. Other
favourites are lighter colors,
luminous neutrals and colours that “excite the
eye.”

I've always felt that this house would be
strong in neutral tones. Creams and stone col-
ors will give it the simplicity that it deserves.

To be quite honest, it took three times to
get the colour right.
