Multi-level facility would be a new concept of care NOW THAT the provincial bud- get has been brought down, Mac Chappell is anxiously waiting to hear that the. funding for Parkway Place has been confirmed. By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer Parkway Place will be a 200- bed multi-level care facility that Chappell says will be one of the first “if not the first in B.C. to be built to multi-level specifica- tions.” of North Vancouver Kiwanis Care Home Society, who have built and now operate three local seniors’ housing facilities. " -Thevlargest, the 16-storcy Whiteley Court highrise, includes 125 intermediate-care beds for which the Kiwanis have. been seeking.a replacement site since 1989 when they first-met with. Ministry of Health officials. “Our highrise building is not really conducive to even interme- _.diate care, let alone extended care,” says Chappell. : _. And so he is holding his breath that the promised provincial fund- ing will materialize so that devel- - opment of the new muiti-level care facility can begin in time to “meet a planned opening date of Jan. 1, 1996. . The increase in size is primari- - ly the. suggestion of the province and “multi-level” is the new con- cept in terms of care homes. Intermediate care residents are still able to move about but gencr- ally require a level of 24-hour ‘nursing care that. would be MODEL: Beltone Standard Trio Chappell is executive director unavailable in the home. Extended care residents are unable to move about without assistance and require help for most daily activities. Up until now, as care home residents aged and their need for assistance and nursing increased, they were forced to move fram” one facility to another in order.to obtain the appropriate level of. . care, often resulting in anxiety for the patient and upheaval and g ‘guilt for their families. The concept of muiti-level care is intended to alleviate this prob- lem by allowing residents to age in the same place, And it-is likely that similar facilities will be required. Approximately 16% of the North Shore’s population will be over the age of 65 by 1996. That does not sound’ like a potential problem until-you: start to think about how much space 24, 000 beds occupy. Of course only a fraction of those seniors will require long: ' term care but the total-:number of seniors will continue to increase’ as the population ages further. . These will include an adult daycare, a community room, a multi-purpose room, family visit- ing rooms, health services, beauty shops and a tuck shop. The 23 beds on the ground floor of the. three-storey facility will form a psycho/geriatric wing for patients with Alzheimer’s. They will get their own dining room, lounge and outdoor space. Parkway Place will be located just south of Mount Seymour Parkway: off an extension of Berkley Road on a 16,600 square metre (4.1 acre) triangular lot leased from the District of North Vancouver. The district completed the pub- lic hearing and rezoning of the site to accommodate the hame | ‘ Jast year and issued the devctop-' ment permit in February in antici- pation of the provincial funding. Committed to providing affordable services and housing to seniors, the Kiwanis Club have tects, describes the design for the care facility as innovative. Instead of typical narrow _ building wings with rooms open-: ing off both sides of a central cor- ridor, Parkway Place attempts: to. define resident homes, ‘each with’ - their own ‘living and dining rooms, activity rooms, lounges, bathing facilities and care centres. The homes-.will be arranged in two U-shapes located on either Reguiar Value— $775 y ' Save $ Hundreds $ up until April 8th been active in North Vancouver since 1921, Chappell says a volunteer board spends a tremendous amount of time and cnergy in the development of its programs and ‘can always use help in driving, visiting, funcraising or meal delivery. The five-year investment in the development of Parkway Place has-been a special commitment that besides setting a new stan- dard in dignified care of the elder-_ ly, will provide 50 to 70 full- and part-time jobs on the North Shore.
