wants building code

changes to allow 2nd suites

AMENDING THE provincial building code to allow for
the legalization of secondary svites was endorsed Monday
night by North Vancouver City Council wiics council
members passed a motion to request a code change sub-
mission from other municipal bodies.

The Greater Vancouver
Regional District (GVRD) and the
Union of British Columbia
Municipalities will be asked to
“prepare a submission to the
minister of municipal affairs re-
questing that the British Columbia
building code and British Colum-
bia electrical code be reviewed to
provide for regulation specific to
the development of secondary
suites in existing buildings.”’

ly with the requirements of the
National Building Code.”’

The report also included a draft
bylaw aimed at creating secondary
suite regulations, including:

@ permitting one suite in any
one-family residential dwelling;

© allowing suites only in owner-
occupied buildings;

@ prohibiting conversion to strata
tithe;

© requiring suite owners to pro-
vide an additional parking space.

Ald. Rod Clark said the
owner-occupied regulation would
mean ‘‘kissing goodbye half the
problem, ** because approximately
half the city’s secondary suites are
not in owner-occupied homes.
