TODAY, MOST homes in
Canada have smoke detec-
tors. Even though they’ve
only been around for about
10 years, more than two-
thirds of our homes are
protected by at least one.

On the North Shore they are
required in new homes. Many
communities even require existing
homes to have them. Why all the
interest in smoke detectors?

It’s simple: they save lives. Eas-
ily and inexpensively. In| North
Vancouver last year, a $10 smoke
alarm saved) three lives. How
many other miracles of modern
life can make that claim?

The plain, terrible fact is that
smoke kills: smoke from a fire
several rooms away; smoke in the
middle of the night while you're
asivep: smoke loaded with poison
gases from burning materials;
smcke that sneaks around your
home, slipping around corners
and around closed doors; smoke
that, in spite of what you might
believe, wan't wake you up, it will
kill you first.

for. They stand guard over your
family and home. Hoa fire starts,
smoke detectors smell it first and
sound a loud alarm so vou can
escape in time. There are even
some that are designed to alert the
hearing-impaired.
