Shore MOST SENIORS wish to remain as independent and active as possible, Given the right supports, mast people also prefer to live in their own home environment. The North Shore Home Support Services Society (NSHSSS) is a non-profit agency originally pro- viding home support services on the North Shore under the auspices of the Victorian Order of Nurses. The society provides a variety of programs to assist eligi- ble seniors and others to continue living independently. The Homemaker program, which originated in 1963, has grown dramatically and has since been enhanced by additional pro- grams developed to meet the changing needs of those in the community with health problems. Many times, a client’s care is enhanced by additional services. For example, a client living alone who has a Home Support Worker to assist with a bath and cleaning may worry about falling and not being able to get to the phone. The Home Emergency Response System is vital in reassuring clients and family members that emergency services are oniy « push-button away. Since the Home Emergency System program began in Febru- ary 1988, it has responded to over 99 emergencies. Respite service can also com- plement Homemaker help.
