Based in New York, with bouti- ques on Madison Avenue and in the World Financial Trade Centre, Tahari’s designs may be found all across North America in such stores as Bloomingdale’s, Nord- strom, Sullocks and Saks Fifth Avenue. The Vancouver store, owned by Tahari’s cousin Nan Farzan and open since 1984, will be presenting Tahari’s fall collection on Mon- day, Sept. 18. Farzan said Tahari’s life is a rags-to-riches story that would make dramatic copy for a Hollywood novel. Born in Jerusalem and sent to an orphanage school at age six, Tahari later joined the Israeli army to make enough money to travel to Europe and eventually America where he arrived with $200 in his pocket. In New York Tahari worked at car washes and laundromats. ‘‘At times he was so broke he slept on a park bench in Central Park,’’ Far- zan said. Tahari opened a small store in a sleazy area of the city which sold women’s blouses for $4.99. From here he began to design clothes and North Vancouver on Lonsdale at 13th St. 985-0707 Richmond Lansdowne Park Shopping Centre 270-1787 — White Rock in Semiahmoo Mall 531-5010 expand his stores, creating Tahari Limited in 1979. Now, at 38 years of age, Tahari is at the apex of a $50 million marufacturing empire and, ac- cording to Farzan, the buzz word in innovative and exclusive fash- ions, Sophisticated, shapely separates star this fall at Tahari. The big news of the season is jackets in every conceivable, figure-flattering silhouette. Equestrian looks strike a sporty note this season, in groups that play tonal hues of brown against each other. Coats run the gamut from sophisticated entrance makers to playful trapeze versions trimmed in faux fur. Crayon hues of emerald green, chrome yellow and fire- engine red add punch. Tahari’s story in itself is enough to warrant a trip to meet the fash- ion guru this Monday. Farzan has already sent invita- tions to his North Shore clientele and said those interested in seeing the fashion show and meeting Tahari may gain entrance with this copy of the North Shore News.
