Siddon said in his letter his
department has already talked with
the Vancouver Port Corporation
(VPC) about protecting the area
from ‘harmful alteration’’ in
order to preserve existing fish
habitat, and it takes a firm stance
with regard to any VPC marina
plans.

Vancouver Port Corporation to
reconsider any concept which
would involve constructing a
marina in the Maplewood mudflat
area since a marina may have a
significant effect on the fisheries
resource. Correspondence detailing
similar objectives was also sent to
the Vancouver Port Corporation
by Environment Canada and the
Provincial Fish and Wildlife
Branch.”’

tory Scciety and the Federation of
BC Naturalists, is delighted with
the minister’s support.

“It goes further than we had
hoped and is truly an enlightened
statement,”” said Partington, refer-
ring in particular to Siddon’s final
comments.

The closing paragraph of the
minister’s letter read: ‘*We support
your efforts in requesting the Van-
couver Port Corporation to either
dedicate the area as conservation

or donate the iands to the nature
Trust of British Columbia.’

Partington points out that since
the VPC land holdings are above
the intertidal marsh, mudflat and
Tiparian vegetation that are the
focus of the ministry’s concern,
the call to ‘‘donate the lands” in-
cludes all the area conservationists
are fighting to preserve.

‘Now if we could just get North
Vancouver District Council to
jump off the fence,’* concluded
Partington wistfully.
