I’m happy to oblige. John Turner and Ed Broadbent now have so many people upset over perceived threats to medicare, UI, pensions, etc. that it’s useless for Tories to simply go on shouting ‘‘Liars!”" and getting mad at anyone who asks questions. True, those specific threats are NOT in the deal as presently writ- ten. But this misses Turner's and Broadbent’s point, as | understand it. In further negotiations -— ex- pected to continue for several more years — over the fine print and es, ecially over ‘‘subsidies’’, they fear the tough American horse traders will constantly return to the attack and bamboozle a Mulroney government inio giving away the store bit by oit. Obviously, neiiher side can PROVE the other wrong about something that ray or may not happen. So it’s pointless for Tories to rage and lash out. Instead, here's the kind uf sincere, up-front script Brian should now use — 2s BERT FLEMING hopeful. Explosive situation “OQ Canada”’ plays softly in the background: “Yes, voters, we do understand your concerns, The Free Trade Agreement, like any other deal, does NOT give us everything we'd like. But it DOES give us what we badly need to keep ourselves in the style we're used to —- chances to sell even more to that huge U.S. market, There'll be a few job losses while we readjust but all the best analysts say many more jobs will be created, Sorry we've no firm figures until it happens. “At the moment the Agreement contains no threa: to social ser- vices, culture or regional support schemes, But we do realize it's possible, even if unlikely, that the Yanks might still try (o mess with such areas when negotiating details somewhere down the road. You can trust us, in that case, to send them packing at the very first sign of any attempt to tinker with Ca- nadian sovereignty — even if it means killing the deal. However, let's also remember that Canada was built by people ready to make a leap of faith for a brighter future. So join us in making that leap again on Nov. 21!" Sounds a lot more believable than ‘‘Liars! Liars!'’, Prime Minister. tet SOMEBODY DID LURK in the shadows after all for Mayor Don Lanskail — to wit, well known West Van business character and perennial office-seeker Bert Flem- ing, 66, who emerged Monday as mayoralty challenger in the Nov. 19 civic election. I doubt that His Worship is shaking in his shoes just yet. But Bert, who’s run for council several times before, as many it has gone none too soon. rian’s best hope! well as in the 1983 B.C. election, is always fun on the hustings — like when he taunted the city fathers as **chicken”’ over the twin towers issue at a recent packed public hearing. Meanwhile, of the six contenders chasing the West Van seats vacated by retiring Aldermen Dave Finlay and Gordon Rowntree, two to watch are Andy Danyliu, who lost by a whisker last time, and 1970s North Van City mayor Tom Reid who's run in West Van twice for alderman and ance for mayor. The other four are 75th Jubilee chairman Jim Mac- Carthy, broadcaster Barrie Clark, jet pilot Bob Fearn and business woman Carol Ann Reynolas. Not only are fireworks and crackers noisy, but their potential to harm — especially in the hands of youngsters — is great. Each year on Halloween night, and for weeks precetling and following October 31, throngs of children and adolescents prowl the streets setting off the explesives and each year people get hurt by them. This past Halloween a 12-year-old boy was sent to ' ‘ hospital from injuries caused by an exploding pipe —— : ; tees bomb. The expiosives used in the bomb likely came — from fireworks. Banning fireworks outright may be too harsh a step in curbing Halloween violence, but the current chaos on the streets must be stopped. Parents bear the most to blame for allowing their children to use fireworks without an adult present and for allowing them to use firecrackers a4 ali. . . The law spells out the danger.
