FOR SENIORS ON TUESDAY" NV student has unique experience NORTH VANCOUVER student Robert Deary is one of 52 top high school students from across Canada who got a chance to design and build a hovercraft or create a video documentary. It was part of the University of British Columbia's Shad Valley summer program, 4 four-week op- portunity for students in grades 11 and 12 to get hands-on experience with technology and research and develop their talents in these areas. From June 26 to July 23, this year’s participants were able to develop a portfolio of high-tech blue chip and high-risk stocks, at- tend seminars on music synthesiz- ing, computer graphics and raising money on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. The Shad Valley program is sponsored by Canadian corpora- tions and advunced technology companies. Each firm provides six weeks of employment after the program for the student it spon- sored. Students are selected for their high academic achievements, creativity, initiative and drive and interpersonal skills. While no aca- demic credits are offered ‘‘Shadl- ings,’’ the experience and challenge are invaluable. This is the third year UBC has participated in the program, which was developed six years ago by the Canadian Centre for Creative Technology at the University of Waterloo. Seven Canadian univer- sities sponsor Shad Valley pro- grams and a total of about 350 students take part.
