TIPS

Many people believe trees and shrubs can only be successfully planted in
spring, and consequently there is always a “spring rush,” with the garden
centres doing a roaring trade for a few weeks. In fact, with most trees and
shrubs now grown in containers, it is possible to plant virtually any time. The
only difference is to ensure adequate watering while the plants are settling into
their new location. You will find a much more relaxed atmosphere in the “off

: “season,” with nursery people able and willing to talk to you about your prob-
WH | E lems and requirements. One tip — | see many plants being transported in car
: trunks or open trucks without sun or wind protection, and they often arrive at

, their destination in a frazzled, badly damaged condition.
