By STEPHEN BARRINGTON News Reporter John Kelly, chairman of the non-profit, Combhultas Ceolroiri Eireann (Fellowship of trish Musi- cians), explains that some of the music the group plays is so old no one knows when it was wriuen, “Traditional Srish songs were passed on from = generation to generation before anyone thought to write them down,"” he explains. Each of the 20) players, all champions in this type of music, plays two or three different in- struments, witness to their exten- sive talents. Although traditional Jrish music can be lively, it can also be sad. Kelly explains that many of the songs were written during the great potato famine that devastated the country many years aga. “The music is played with a lot of feeling and emotion,”” says Kel- ly. As to the singing, listeners ex- pecting to hear accompanying music will find trish songs have no music. ‘‘Traditionally, in their homes and so on, Irish people sing without music,”’ explains Kelly. And Irish dancing is unlike other more common types of dance. “With Irish dancing you have to see the feet,’’ he says. ‘They don’t use the arms.” The entire company, ranging in age from 19 to 60, all perform as amateurs and receive no pay. “They play this music for the 4 fove of it,’ says Kelly. ‘'We're hoping the theatre will be filled."'
