10 - Wednesday. December 18, 1985 - North Shore News Library to apply for Expo grant NORTH VANCOUVER City Council approved Monday the city library’s request to apply for an Expo grant to pay for a proposed library expan- sion, The library, located at the civic centre, will request $910,000 from the Expo 86 Legacy Fund to build the addition, which, if accepted, would be at no extra cost to the city. Charles Stein, chairman of the city public library board, appeared before council recently to request the city’s approval for the library to use an Expo grant to facilitate the expansion. $30M AVAILABLE “The provincial governm- ent made available $30 mil- lion for capital projects,”" Stein said. ‘With the inade- quacy of the current building and new funds, | thought it would be the perfect mar- riage — their money and our building.” ; But the city tabled the motion until Monday night, to allow city staff time to report on the proposed ex- tention. Staff concerns about the project included whether the civic centre had the capacity for a 8,400 square-foot ex- pansion, whether the heating and air circulation systems were sufficient-for an expan- sion, and whether sufficient parking would be available. ‘COUNCIL AGREED But despite staff objec- tions, council unanimously agreed to let the application go through to the provincial government to see if the ex- pansion qualified for a grant. Mayor Jack Loucks said he recently heard Jim Hewitt, minister responsible for Consumer and Cor- poraie Affairs, say that monies from the Expo Legacy Fund would go to areas in the Interior, because the Lower Mainland would the money benefit from “offer limited!
