Hosts have responsibility
not to let guests drink, drive Pipiplepee tugs

MORE RESPONSIBILITY for drinking and driving
behavior is being placed on owners, managers and
servers in licensed establishments.

According to Dr. Bill Mercer, director of B.C.’'s
CounterAttack program, ‘Some drinking drivers
have taken drinking establishments to court alleging
that the establishment was responsible for them
becoming impaired, claiming server liability.”

The courts have agreed with this, and Mercer says
this same reasoning could apply to the host of a
private party.

A host can’t wrestle the car keys from someone
after they’ve been drinking. “This might end up in a
fight and possible assault charges," says Mercer.

Responsible hosts plan the end of their gatherings
with as much care as they plan the beginning and the
middle. They know who has agreed to be a desig-
nated driver or plan alternative sources of transpor-
tation home.

They keep an eye peeled for a guest who seems to
be drinking more than he or she can handle, stop

serving alcoholic drinks about one hour before their
party ends and responsible hosts always ensure non-
alcoholic drinks are available for their guests.

. Remember, your last resort is to call the police.
States Mercer, ‘‘This may make you feel uncomfort-
able, but it is your responsibility to protect your
friends and others sharing the road.”

An Autoplan policy applies to the vehicle, not the
driver, therefore the owner has responsibility no
matter who is driving. Lend your vehicle to someone
you know is impaired and you are responsible for
whatever injuries and damage that driver might
cause.

Lend your vehicle to anyone who has an accident
and it’s your safe driving discount that is affected.

If you choose to ride with a drinking driver and
you suffer injuries in a crash, the courts could reduce
your claim settlement.

Every drinking drive: puts everyone at risk.

Call the police when you see a drinking driver — it
is the responsible thing to do.
