— AlO - Friday, June 8, 1984 - North Shore News By ELLSWORTH DICKSON or financial as well as career con- siderations, many of today’s mothers are working. Today we pre- sent the views and exper- iences of two North Shore Moms. Lorna Smith is a mother of four and made the decision to stay home. Shirley Lucyk is a mother of two and has a career as a teacher mentally handicapped ch n. y husband and | M made the decision for me to work for financial reasons. 1 was fortunate to find work teaching mentally handi- capped children. Although I leave early for work, | am able to spend some time with the children before | leave. And I’m home by three. I’m lucky that way. The bad thing about my situation ts that I could be y husband and I with my four-year-old son more. The good things about my working besides easing the financial burden for my family are satisfaction and self-esteem I receive doing my job well in helping men- tally handicapped children. Also, | feel my husband has become more involved with my children’s lives. He has had to be. He takes the children to school and play career as I was most inter- opposing views on the issues of the day school every day. At the play school picnic, he was the only father. My hus- band helps considerably with the household chores, which I appreciate very much. Being a working mother, I find | am busy and stick- ing to a schedule, which I don’t like. So now I com- bine visiting friends with fitness and I greatly enjoy long walks with a. girl friend. I get fit and have a Visit. Working is expensive. {x’s $400 per month for a housekeeper and $100 per month for gas to get to work. I would advise young mothers who want to work to look into flex-time, job sharing or part-time. Try to find a job where you can spend some time in the day with your children. Shirley Lucyk Working mother ‘Children of working mothers are at a disadvantage’ M talked it over and we both felt it was important for me to be home not only before the children were old enough to go to school, but also when they were in school. It is a better situation for a child to come home after school to his Mom. ¢ We definitely made some inancial sacrifices by my staying at home. However, I did not regret missing any ON WHITE PAPER ested in raising my family successfully. Staying home, | have had the enjoyment of taking part in my children’s activi- ties such as sports. And, of course, I was able to be at home when the children were ill, a serious problem for working mothers. I think children of work- ing mothers are at a dis- advantage by the Mom not being there to support them and keep a closer eye on their development. My hus- band and I are very proud of our children and | believe itis in part due to the years of effort | have put in just being there to help them. Although the little one is too small to appreciate it, | think the older ones were glad I was around. For a while, I worked part-ume, but | was lucky to find an evening job so | could still be with the kids Mieeting pleases parents council THE NORTH Vancouver Parents Council on Education wrapped its operations for this school year with a changes to. secondary quirements Monday.
