Both Hicks and Campbell are very excited about the selection of fitness programs offered this year, which in- clude a variety of classes for people with special needs and interests, as well as the regular fitness programs with different levels of ability. The North Van Rec Centre groups the regular fitness levels into mild, moderate, intense and very intense. The complexity and repetition of exercises increases with the higher levels of fitness, and the very intense work-out re- quires a 15-20 minute run before class. The fitness focus of both Rec Centres is directed towards developing cardio- respiratory efficiency, muscular strength, muscular endurance and mobility and flexibility. The two Rec Centres offer a special pre- and post-natal class, with mild exercises to tone the body during and after pregnancy. The exercise during pregnancy stimulates the circulatory system, which nourishes the baby. Also, im- proved abdominal strength will help reduce frequent back pain and assist in labor. And after delivery, exercise will help in regaining a trim figure. The North Van Rec Centre has a Large as Life class, for ample bodied people who are afraid to exercise around slimmer bodies. The relaxed atmosphere encourages par- ticipants to enjoy their work- outs, and there is no em- phasis on dieting. Hicks says dieting may begin as a result of the positive atmosphere, but it is not promoted. Another special program offered in North Van is Car- diac Fitness. A stress test 1s required before interested candidates can partake, but the program is a mild fitness class for stable cardiac pa- tients, and individuals with hypertension or other forms of cardiovascular disease. North Van offers a con- servative, but progressive exercise program for people with back problems.
