Al8 - Sanday, June 26, 1983 - North Shore News CONTRARY.TO PUBLIC OPINION Seniors lead ctive lives A recent study by the University of Waterloo's department of recreation shows that retired people, from a wide range of in- comes and _ educational backgrounds, lead busy, active lives. Contrary to popular opimion about the elderly, this group of senior citizens, all of whom live in their own homes or apart- ments, spend a lot of ime visiting, dining out, watching television and indulging a wide range of interests. Dr. Jiri Zuzanek and Dr. Roger Mannell, aided by graduate student Stephen James, based their con- clusions on the results of a survey, funded by Statistics Canada, done among 180 people aged 65-75 in the Kitchener-Waterloo com- munity. “We found that by and large they are quite happy with their lives, particularly if they have something close to what they regard as an adequate retirement in- come; that is, if they have no serious money worries,” says Dr. Mannell. The participants were asked to keep a diary of all their activities for three days. They made entries in their calendars, pinpointing these activities in ten-minute blocks during the three days. noting time spent in sleeping, personal care, housework, leisure, visiting and various other ways. The researchers did a computer analysis of the data. The report reveals a lively group of people. More than 92 per cent visit frends and relatives; 90 per cent dine in restaurants; 77 per cent go to church; 71 per cent play cards; almost 92 per cent watch television; more than 90 per cent read newspapers; 60 per cent read fiction and an equal number read non- fiction; 65 per cent attend clubs and meetings. “They also play table games and bingo, walk, go to the beaches, do calisthenics, attend concerts, go to plays, and on and on,” says Dr. Zuzanek. Some male-female dif- ferences did become ap parent in this study. While females spend more time reading, males watch more T.V. Females spend about eight hours a week on “domestic obligations”, including housework. And while men spend more time on leisure activities, females spend twice as much time visiting friends and_ en- tertaining guests. Dr. Mannell would now hke to further analyse the relationship between activity and happiness. In a project funded by a $16,000 grant from the federal govern- ment’s department of Fitness and Amateur Sport. the two researchers are keeping in touch with 100 senior citizens who have been asked to carry beepers. When Mannell and Zuzanek “beep” each subject, seven limes a day, the person completes a short = two- minute questionnaire which tells not only what they are doing, but also how happy they are feeling at the ame (Canadian Science News] Catching on to computers What happens if you take the top grade 12) science students) from schools in North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Howe Sound and the Sunshine Coast and put them in a special one day program of advanced labs in biology, chemustry, computing science, mathematics and physics at Capilano College? ln a word, enthusiasm That was the atmosphere at Capilano recently when the college hosted tts third annual Scicnce EKnnchment Workshop for 65 students from Argyle, Carson Graham, Eiphinstone, Handsworth, Hillside, Howe Sound, Pemberton, Senunel, Seycove, Sutherland, West Van and Windsor sccondary schools The | workshops, beld tn the new sctence labs al the college, gave an op portunity those highly motivated students fo become actively involved in a few of the more interesting techniques and advances in the different dis iphnes Some of the toptes studied were the catraction of DNA from for salmon sperm syn thesis of para aminobe nzarn acid with its punty and com position determined — by analytical copper chelatiag properties modern means of acetyl salicyhy acid (aspirin), gas liquid chromatography. mn terference of waves. troduction to computer graphics for mathematics and an introduction to the College's computing system In attendance along with the students and the col lege’s science faculty were high school teachers. counsellors and the Chair man of the College Board Hilda Rizun Although the college ca panded the Science Ennch ment program this year trom 3S to OS students. it was soll necessary lo turn down twice that many requests for atten dance Not onty Capilano College been en couraged by the cnthussastic response to this program but the science faculty was impressed by the high quah ty of the students attending and thet an oin has scientific in quisitive ness A Dett and loosen Shoulder straps of youu Prac pack wt ren CROSSING A Tver Cor wean Play tt Safe he wm Rew Hern . we This section is specially designed to carry announcements of Engagements, Weddings, Births, Birthdays, Graduations, Anniversaries and all other important events in the lives of your family and friends.
