A4 - Sunday, June 26, 1983 - North Shore News Monday saw two such fires started in the Capilano Mall areas of Marine Drive and then Wednesday night a con- tainer flared up behind the IGA store in Norgate. These bring the number of deliberately set fires in garbage con- tainers within that same area to at least a dozen in recent weeks. North Vancouver District Fire Department was alerted to a fire in the 1100 block Marine Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Mon- day and after putting it out the fire crew decided to check the immediate area in case other fires had been set. A container at 994 Marine, just within the North Van City boun- dary, was also found to be blazing and an 18 ft. pleasure boat stored near to it received minor fire damage. As well as garbage con- tainers, a fruit stand has also been a target in the fire bug's activities. North Van City Fire Department has _ also responded to about four calls in the same vicinity recently. It seems to be hitle more than luck and quick response by the fire departments which have prevented any of the gar- bage container fires from becoming serious blazes. Businesses in the area are being asked not to overfill their garbage con- tainers and to ensure that the lids are kept closed, as is required by local bylaws. The public is also be- ing requested to keep an eye out for suspicious ac- tivities in the area and to immediately report anything at all unusual to the RCMP or the relevent fire department. Those under 19 found in possession of liquor face confiscation of their drinks and being charged. Stepped-up enforcement at liquor stores is aimed at ensuring liquor is bought neither by minors nor by others acting for them. Noisy house parties will also be targets for the unit, who will be responsible for quelling any outbursts and for laying of charges. Warnings appear to be a thing of the past as the unit prepares to lay charges for ‘all alcohol infractions. “Consumption of liquor in public areas, as well as in vehicles will be dealt with by way of charge,” the RCMP warn. The Enforcement Unit has the backing of both North Vancouver councils and various licensed establishments in the com- munity. Patrol members have been attending local schools and drinking premises with their message and are willing to attend other meetings which may be requested by the public. They will also be keeping a wary eye over the issuing of special occasion licences for public and private func- tions, as a result of several recent problems from such events. RCMP remind applicants they need at least 10 days’ notice before the event for approval and that letters of permission may also be re quired from the relevant municipality) for use of facthues. The applicant for the licence must present it to the police and be in alten dance at the special occasion throughout the event.
