500-year-old tree
would be a hazard

Dear Editor:

Those tree lovers of the persua-
sion of Erik Frebold (Mailbox,
March 28) have not followed their
process to its conclusion when they
decry the cutting of such trees as
the 500-year-old fir in the
Caulfeild area road extension.

Such an arboreal giant, with its
crown unsheltered by surrounding
trees, and with its root structure
restricted by underground services
and blacktop roads, will certainly
fall prey to a brisk westerly or a
future Typhoon Freda.

At a height of 125 feet this one
tree can wreak death and destruc-
tion anywhere in an area of 49,000

I just happened to weigh yester-
day’s copy of your newspaper and
found out that it weighed 200
grams; I then weighed the supple-
ments which came with the paper
and was surprised to find that they
weighed 500 grams.

It is totally ridiculous in this day
and age that we use 500 grams of
paper for each household which
you know will end up as waste in
97 per cent of them.
