Demand high for Handydart

THE PHONE is ringing off the hook in a small upstairs of-
fice in Edgemont Village, and Enid Jefferies. wonders how
many people she’ll be able to help today.

“‘The lines are always busy.
People can’t get through so we
can’t pick them up,”* she says.

Even if they could get through
there aren’t enough vehicles to
transport all the elderly, physically
and mentally handicapped people
who need to get to doctor ap-
pointments on the North Shore
and can’t use the regular transit
system.

Capilano branch of .Handydart, a
government-funded transportation
system that whisks elderly and

ing in and we can’t service them all
because we don’t have enough
vehicles,’” she says. ‘‘My heart re-
ally goes out to the people we can’t
help.””

Eight full-time and six part-time
drivers transport people to focal
appointments and as far away as
New Westminster, five days a
week, and to social outings on
Saturdays and Sundays.

Two extra vehicles would help
the centre cope with calls, but Jef-
feries says there isn’t the money in
this year’s budget and hope for
next year looks just as bleak.

Funding for Handydart comes
from three sources: the fare box
and North Vancouver District,
with the bulk of funds coming
from the B.C. government.
