wheels underneath him ... immediately a design
was born.”

That is how Corradino d’Ascanio described his inspiration
for the design of the first Vespa in 1946. From that simple con-
cept a unique style of vehicle grew.

After the Second World War ended, Enrico Piaggio turned
his aircraft factory into a scooter plant, producing the first
Vespas.. It took a couple of style makeovers to come up with a
design that caught the public's eye, but once it began the love
affair lasted for years.

Scooterema celebrates the two-wheeled transport from the
first designs up to the latest models. The ad campaigns of the
"50s and *6Qs show the trends, and the section covering the
scooter’s popularity with the British Mods show it’s role in pop
culture.

The sales of scooters declined sharply in the mid to late "60s

. and sunk even further in the 7°0s and ’80s, seeing some com-
panies close down and others concentrating on eastern markets.

The role of the modern scooter is presented as an engincer-
ing marvel, as new designs appear, cach with it’s own solution
to gridlocked city traffic and emission concerns, electric power
presents the sceoter with a brand new lease on iife,
