Skateboard artist Jonathen Newhouse is hoping Harmony Arts festival-goers have that in mind when they view his skate- board baller Aug. 16 at Ambleside Pork. Newhouse, a part-time youth work- er at the Ambleside Youth Centre, has helped orchestrate the event, which rakes place 1 to 5 p.m. on the closing day of West Van's annual seaside festi- val of the arts. About 15 skateboarders, profession- al and amateur alike, have signed on for the day of demonstrations and friendly competition. They'll be setting “tricks” like the Indy Grab and Switchstance Noseslide to music spun live by DJ Science while aerosol artist Zak Banwell paints a iandscape in the background. It’s certainly artful but it is art? “Absolutely,” says Newhouse, Z1, who describes himself Not as an artist, but as “an old surf dog who likes to ride for the sake of riding and the peace of my soul.” “There’s a fine line between sport and art,” he says, using ‘the Olympic sport of ice dance as a reference. It’s that fine linc that atrracted she attention of festival pro- ducer Laura MacMaster, who credits culturs! services manager Orsana Dexter for coming up ‘vith the idea of a skateboard et. : “It crosses the boundary between arts and athleticism,” says MacMaster. And, perhaps more importantly, it bridges the gap between children’s and adult programming. “The young adult age seemed to be overlooked in past fes- tivals,” she explains. “There’s always been Creative Kids Day and other events for young children. But there sezmed to be a ceal gap between that and more mature programming.” MacMaster would like to see a teen festival as an offshoor of future Harmony Art.
