The North Vancouver triathlete’s time of three hours and 58 minutes was a course record.” The event was a_haif-ironman dis- tance, comprised of a two-kilometre swim in Georgian Bay, a 90-kilometre bike (including a thigh-burning climb up Eliminator, Mountain) and a 21-kilome- te run through the streets of Collingwood and along the rugged Georgian Trail. Second place went to Jamie Cleveland, followed by Mike Buck in times of 4:00 and 4:04 respectively. Last Saturday's win represents the first Long Course national championship for Bares; though he has won four short course championships in previous sea- sons. The North Vancouver man is now preparing to detend his national title at the 1998 national short course champi- -onships (1.5km swim, 40km bike, ]0km run) in Winnipeg on August 8.
