The awards acknowledge

who have furthered the goals of
heritage conservation, preserva-
tion and awareness in West
Vancouver.

Nominations will be accept-

ly well to the heritage character

Submissions can include
support material in the form of
phorographs, plans and publica-
tions. The deadline for nomina-
tions is Friday, Jan. 10. The
awards will Le presented as part
of Heritage Week celebrations,
on Saturday, Feb, 22.

the house during holidays

TO help protect your famiiy and friends this holiday season, experts recommend
keeping some basic home safety tips in mind:

If you cock with a gas oven or range, be sure that you are not neglecting annual mainte-
nance. All fuel-burning appliances should be cleaned and inspected regularly zo help prevent
carbon monoxide build-up in the home.

Have a window opsned slightly while operating fuel-burning appliances or fireplaces to
ensure a fresh, air supply into the home.

Install at least one ULC-listed carbon monoxide detector near the sleeping area of the
home. For added protection, a second detector should be installed near the home’s principle
heating source. Having carbon monoxide detectors is especially important during this ime of
year when both the very young and elderly, who are more susceptible to carbon monoxide poi-
soning, are gathering in the same households.

To help make the kitchen a safer place, install a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher and test
them regularly. Kitchen smoke alarms feature a “hush” button which temporarily quiets the
unit in the event of an alarm caused by cooking smoke or steam. Fire extinguishers for the
kitchen are designed specifically to combat grease or electrical fires.

According to the Canada Safery Council, fire is the third leading cause of accidental death
in Canads. It is important to resist the temptation to remove batteries from smoke alarn.: to
use in children’s toys or other electronic devices during the holidays.
