These community links will be established by initiating and main- taining contact with existing advisory groups and a wide range of community groups. Partnerships with municipal- ities, recreation commissions, school boards, and others involved in creating healthy communities will be enhanced. The purpose is to develop a shared understanding of health that goes beyond lifestyle issues and medical care. To be healthy we also need safe and secure housing, lifelong learning opportunities, steady and adequate income and social support networks in our families, work sites and com- munities, This de‘inition of health makes it imporiant to include a wide range of participants in discussions on how to maintain and enhance the heaith of everyone on the North Shore. seven population health advisory groups within the region consistent with those identified by the Ministry, who have not-always had equal access — - to heaith care. Two | Community Developers — Chery] Hewitt and Vivien Christison were seconded as transition staff to suppoit: this group. One of their first tasks was ° to gather a preliminary list of health issues of concern to existing community Broups. These include: * the need for employment opportunities; . the need for affordable pablic transportation; - _ the need for appropriate, affordable housing; the need to address how to prevent! reduce violence; : the need for improved ; access to: services; ‘the need for fewer entry points to health services; and; the need for greater cule ’ sensitivity.
