Masonic Hall on Bellevue Avenue,
and fewer holding bid cards to push
prices up on items, it was definitely
a Carpet connoisseur's dream.
Prices. were running as fow as
$25 for hand-crafted’ rugs perfect
for the floor of your Lexus. A large
rug that could easily cover the living

room: floor and more sold for..

$1,500.
 °. The big bidder for the night, Ken
Staniforth of. West Vancouver, took
home a carpet titled the Tree of Life,
- showing the carefully hand-crafted
. art of the master.weaver. .

for a mere $2,000.

most part, people were pleased with
the selection ranging from lithos of
Picasso and Cezanne to silk carpets
and jewelry.

Rolling out the carpet on deals
was auctioneer Akram Kahn, owner
of Indo-Persian Carpet Company in
Surrey.

A recent divorce has forced him
to auction his curpets, art work and
jewelry with few reserve prices to
fund a court-ordered demand for
payments from his wife.

Kahn said he chose to have the
auction in West Vancouver because
it is where many of his previous
buyers live.

Unfortunately, he said he has
been unable to attract much interest
in carpet auctions recently.

“The attendance is very low and
it seems to be a buyer’s market,”
Kahn said. “When there are lots of
items, we like to see at least 150
people.”

. Kahn is coneerned the market
for. Persian carpets may be. falling
flat on the ground as competition
becomes more fierce. “A lot of com-
panies are desperate to sell,” he said.-
“Tie only way to sell carpets 1 now is-
by losing money.” ;

He said the best deal of the night”
was a silk Persian carpet, the size.of.
a dining room table. for $1,100.

*.“There is an average of 650 knots
. per square inch in that carpet.”

There may be some good news

for carpet sellers. One North Shore .

with her daughter said she was not
planning to buy anything. But by
