A reader commented that
although challenge and accom-
plishment were rewarding, she
mostly enjoyed the fun and excite-
ment of skiing. Exhilaration and
the feeling of freedom is definitely
a “mountain high” that attracts us
to skiing. From day one, skiing can
be exciting and with better skills
come even bigger thrills.

Unfortunately, many — skiers
miss out on this or experience frus-
tration at some point in their skiing
career.

Here are a few tips in planning
your route to a new peak in perfor-
mance.

ability to develop skills and avoid
injuries. This factor becomes even
more significant at higher skill lev-
els. Be sure to work on your fitness
year-round and remember that ski-
ing often is the best and most spe-
cific way to stay ski fit.

How many times have you
heard someone say “don't blame
your equipment?” In many cases
this may be incorrect. For various
reasons skiers often have equip-
ment which is unsuitable, ill-fitted
or poorly maintained. Many fac-
tors such as stature, strength and
skill-level determine the most suit-
able equipment for each skier.

In addition, the performance of
all ski equipment will only be as
good as its condition. Inappropr-
iate or poorly conditioned equip-

tration, further detracting from a
skiers performance.

icated to skiing. Ask any great
skier they will tell you it isn’t
magic, it's mileage. There is no
subslitute for practice and experi-
ence, so you must be prepared to
commit yourself to skiing on a reg-
ular basis to achieve your goals.
As an instructor, | would be
remiss if | did not encourage the
aid of lessons. Instruction is not a
substitute, but rather an accessory
to experience as learning is always
a process of discovery. A good ski
