There is mist inside Shives’ studio, too, where his latest painting. Cold Mountain (al the Burnaby Art Gallery, through Feb. 20), is leaned. against the wall. ; At first, Cold Mountain resem- bles a 2.4 m by 2.4 m blank white plywood panel. But closer inspection reveals the shape of a mountain peak beneath the thickly textured paint and strange abstract forms that drift among the clouds. Shives, born in 1943, has painted all his life. He received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1966, and an MA in painting and sculpture from Stanford University in 1969. In 1992 he was named a Distinguished Citizen of North Vancouver in recognition of his artistic accomplishments. Shives is probably known best for the innovative relief prints he has made since 1973. “I was attracted to printmak- ing not because | could make multiple images, but because of the discipline the form demands,” he says. Cold Mouniain is the result of _Shives’ ambitious marriage of painting with printmaking tech- niques. ; Shives began Cold Mountain by laying wooden panels on the floor-and gouging them with an electric router. “There’s a lot of dust and. igns & Remodelling TO CREATE his most recent works, North Vancouver artist Arnold Shives combined painting with printmaking techniques. rackel. At times, the router blade has cut tight through the panel. “There are still some gouges on the studio floor.” Once Shives had finished the lywood base, he added on engths of wooden dowelling, plastic tubing, and multiple coats of acrylic paint.
