Dear Editor: At the constitutional forum heid at the Centennial Theatre last Fri- day, an older gentleman happened to sit next to me and a friend. He was alone and demonstrably couldn't wait for the microphones to be opened because he im- mediately commandeered us as a preliminary audience. “I've lived all over Canada,” says he. Friend and I exchanged glances. ‘‘And I’ve lived in Quebec. There are great people there. . . “What I think everyone should be asking is ‘What’s in this for Canada?’ Not ‘What’s in this for me, or what*s in this for my pro- . Vince?’ *" It sounded better actually when -he got up and had his turn at the mike.. To me, he made the most sense Of any of the one-minute mike-clutchers. My husband is determined to vote No on Monday. I have not much time to change his mind. I shall try first by reminding him of the money involved in re- doing the whole thing. What about the cost alone of printing the entire Consensus on the Con- stitution in every newspaper in the country? Five pages of close- printed text and all paid for by you and me, soldier. (He likes it when Ut appeal ta his fighting spirit.) { shall point out that if the Constitution is rejected, every lawyer in the country will be laughing and rubbing their hands with glee. He doesn’t like laughing lawyers. I've tried to point out — f Vote won't settle anything Dear Editor: * With regards to the Yes or No vote on the constitution, regardless of which wins it will not settle anything. The question should have been to Quebec — do you wish to join with the rest of the provinces on an equal basis politically and fi- nancially? : If Quebec wants French only — that’s fine so long as they don’t force it on the rest of the pro- vinces. It would be interesting to know how much taxpayers’ money Phoney Baloney and Ottawa are going to spend on the Yes vote. Also how much they allow the No supporters. J.E. Barlow North Vancouver NORTH SHORE opposition to the package of reforms te Canada’s Constitution con ‘tained in the Charlottetown Accord appears to do growing with the approach of the Oct. . 28 federal referendum. tn a Sept. 13 North Shore News sur- vey of 50S North and West Vancouver residents, 86% of the respondents said they planned to vote in the referendum. Of that total, though it’s useless — that no one — but no one — will settle for less, so what's the point in start- ing over? And there's no use appealing to his sense of broad-mindedness, tolerance, multicultural acceptance — that would be barking up the wrong tree entirely. He tends to be an Anglo-Saxon supremacist — if you'll excuse my French. I’ve got one trump card up my sleeve and | don’t really know when to play it. He doesn’t realize that the American Civil War wasn't fought over slavery at all. It was about unity. The war was fought over whether or not the southern states had the right to secede from the Union. Unity is strength, I’H tell him. What I want for our children is an undiminished Canada with a bit of economic clout. But I don't suppose he'll listen Maybe Ill make him an ap- ple-blackberry pie for supper on Sunday night and remind him we met each other in Montreal — way, way back when — met and married between Easter and August. Vive l'amour, I'll say, and sec if that changes his mind. Elaine Hopkin North Vancouver P.S. 1 let my husband read this letter and he went for the apple pie on Sunday night. N.
