The rac:: drew 1,400 runners for the marathon and 750 runners for the half marathon. Aimost half the course followed a North Shore route and included running over Liens Gate and Second Narrows bridges. Grade one student places first in B.C. chess championships NORTH VANCOUVER’S Christopher Krys has quali- fied to go to Montreal for the. National Scholastic Chess Challenge after the Grade I pupil recently came first in the B.C. provincial finals. Other North Shore residents who competed in the B.C. finals included Matthew Macapagal (Grade 2, fourth place) and Frances Macapagal (Grade 8, third place). ’ Approximately 100 chess players from throughout the province took part in the competition April The lead-in competition to the provincial finals was the Van- couver Regionals Finals held in early April at the Killarney Com- munity Centre with 86 participants taking part and representing Van- couver, Burnaby, Richmond, Co- quitlam, North Vancouver and West Vancouver. : This grade-by-grade competi- tion produced the best players for each grade levei and students from North Vancouver took top honors in three grade levels. Top honors of first place for Grade | went io Christopher Krys, and second place to Kyle Berg. Grade 2 top honors went to Matthew Macapagal (1991 B.C. Champion for Grade 1), second place to Mark Krys, and third place to Sean Regan. For Grade 3, second place went to Kenneth Magtoto. For Grade 4, Athena Macapagal took fourth place. Eleven students from St. Ed- mund’s Elementary School located in North Vancouver participated in the Chess Chalienge. Those Students included Krys, Berg, Minerva Macapagal, Matthew Macspagal, Mark Krys, Regan, Magtoto, Robert Pinlac, Krystal Lee Nabnychuk, Sarah Baker and Athena Macapagal. Another participant was Shahin Nabi of West Vancouver, who took the second place honors for Grade 5. In the higher grades, Frances Macapagsl took first place in the Grade 8 competition. Dynamo’s Gill wins gold FOUR ATHLETES from the West Coast Dynamos Gymnastic Club in West Vancouver competed in the Provincial Power Tumbling Championships which were held in Revelstoke April 16 to 18. Colette Kime, 15, won the pro- vincial Level Three category while teammate Kathleen Marshall, 14, took the silver medal. Christina Frewin, 13, took the bronze medal in provincial Level One category. Karen Gill, 12, won the national Novice category. This was the third and final trial for the B.C. team selection for the competition in Quebec City at the national championships, which will be held May 17 to 20. Gill’s performances placed her in first place for the novice team. The event will feature a kids’ triathlon, a triathlon for various age groups and a triathlon for top triathletes. This year’s event is a fundraiser for the chemotherapy unit at Lions Gate Hospital. The triathlon sponsors include Sussex Reaity, North Shore News and the North Shore Credit Union. The run, designed for endurance runners, will begin at Horseshoe Bay and is limited to 100 athictes. Volunteers are needed for pre-race set-up and to help at stations. Stieda was also a participant in the fundraiser. Cycling enthusiasts numbering 4,000 from all over the Lower Mainiand braved the rain and raised in excess of $200,000 for heart and stroke research and education after participating in the 50-km ride.
