(UBC) to offer a first-year engineering transfer pro- gram. ~ Reimar Hauschiidt, convenor of the college’s engineering transfer program, said the course may in- crease the number of women entering the field. The program, scheduled to begin in September, will allow students to take an entire first- year package in engineering in the community college setting. Women who are reluctant to enter a male-dominated engineer- ing classroom at university may find the Capilano College pro- gram far more hospitable, said Hauschildt. ‘Science is less intimidating for female students at Capilano Col- lege because of the small class sizes and because the instructors care about their students. Several of our instructors, such as Penny LeCouteur, have been directly in- volved in improving the lot of women in science,’’ said Hauschildt. He added that over the past six years 62% of the major science scholarship -winners at Capilano College have been women. Although transfer of individual courses to UBC's engineering program had been possible at Capilano College in the past, this will be its first fully transferable engineering program. Students who achieve an ac- ceptable academic record in the first year will be guaranteed ad- mission to UBC based on program demand. With minor modifica- tions in curriculum, engineering transfer students may also prepare themselves for direct entry into second-year engineering at Simon Fraser University or the University of Victoria. Information meetings for pro- spective engineering students will be held on March 31 and Appsil 28 at 7 p.m. For more information call 984-4955. hand knits; mot!{ designs, ‘T's, ote cardigans,-pgld, golf shirts. and’of North Vancouver School District 44: Next meeting is Aprii 14.
