B.C. volleyball championship set for Handsworth HANDSWORTH ROYALS will host the B.C. high school “‘AAA’’ volleyball championships Nov. 28-30 where 16 schools from around the province will vie for the title. Wayne Desjardins’ West Van- couver Highlanders are ranked se- cond behind Surrey’s Earl Mar- riott going into the 29th annual tournament. Undefeated in league and playoff play, the Highlanders won the North Shore champion- shps and iook first place in the North Shore ‘‘AAA"™ zone tourney. Handsworth, coached by Mike Rockwell, was third in both the North Shore league and the zone tournament and has the host berth in the B.C.’s. They are ranked ninth. Sentinel Spartans will play to- night at Handsworth in a six-team B.C. inter-zone wildcard playoff to determine the final team in the B.C. championships. Coached by Sue Pedersen, the Spartans placed fourth in league play, second in the zone tourney, and are ranked sixth in B.C. by the tournament. The 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight. Pool A con- sists of Richmond, John Oliver of Vancouver, College Heights of Prince George, Semiahmoo of White Rock, Centennial of Co- quitlam, Handsworth, Mount Douglas of Victoria and LV Rodgers of Nelson. Pool B has Earl Marriott, West Vancouver, Killarney of Vancouver, Max Cameron of Powell River, Ver- non, South Delta, Caledonia of Terrace and the wildcard winner. Each school plays seven best- of-three round robin matches beginning with the opening round tomorrow at 9 a.m. and continu- ing until 8:30 p.m. Three courts will be used simultaneously. The grand opening ceremonies, which include the marching in of all teams, takes place at 11:30 a.m. Friday's round robin action goes from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The top four teams in each pool advance to the championship round on Saturday at 9 a.m., while consolation matches will be played at Hillside and West Van. The championship final is set for Capilano College's new Sporsplex at 3:15 p.m. The banquet and awards conclude the weekend at Handsworth at 6:30 p.m. Satur- day. St. Anthony teams collect four titles SAINT ANTHONY won four out of a possible five titles at the re- cent CYA Volleyball Finals. Their record earned the school the ageregate score as well, with St. Mary’s in second place. St. Anythony’s juvenile, junior and senior girls’ teams, coached by Cathy Carter, defeated St. Helen's, St. Andrews and Corpus Cristi. The senior team was led by the play of Elizabeth Mah and Ciara McCormack. The juvenile boys, coached by Simon Maledy, won the fourth t- tle by defeating St. Mary’s.
