Keep challenging yourself Visit the Margaret Fulton Centre open housekraft sale Nov. 18/19 OLD AGE in itself can be as cozy as a flannelette bathrobe, and just as comfortable, but most of its good parts hinge on your being able to contend, b Some can’t, and live with fami- ly members or have daily care persons who ‘‘do”’ for them. One is grateful, but oh the monotony. If one of those is you —~ and face it, it might be any one of us any time — then let’s pretend. Close your eyes and imagine a Jarge airy bright room, high-ceil- inged. Furnish it with comfortable chairs, some bunched together for smiles and talk, sorne a bit sepa- tate for the readers and ietter- writers. Arrange some small tables over that way, near the kitchen door. Say six or eight seats per table, for lunch. Be sure to leave a good space here in the middle, for setting up some card tables. Some of our guests may want to play bridge, or cribbage, or are stuck on crossword puzzles. What about fancy-work? There’s a crafts-person on hand, too, you know. Also, there has to be a broad clear space, where we can set up for chair exercises, or watch a‘movie. Don’t forget the boss. She needs a corner for her phones and files. We'll put her over here by the big windows, where she can keep track of the action and still be accessible to everyone. There. It looks nice, doesn’t it? OK, open the doors now, and we'll fill it up with all those peo- ple who need a break from their surroundings.- We’ve made it safe -and warm and welcoming and even a little bit stimulating so that anyone who spends days and nights ‘‘in .care’’ can have a change of scenery and company. We've made room for at least 18, but say, that really means 36. You think of it — if these 18 are safely sheltered and entertained, it means 18 care-givers are free for six or seven hours in which to restore their spirits and refresh their hopes. Everyone wins. There’s a hitch in the works, though. One that’s hard to reconcile with current conditions The problem is that hargaret Fulton Centre, whick I’ve just described to you, is under-ssed, - This is a real boggler in tnese days, when one stands in line or takes a number or puts a name on a waiting list for just about everything. It doesn’t stand to reason that there should be a shortage of candidates for this pleasant place. The answer must lie in between somewhere. They asked me if I could winkle out the stoppage and dynamite the log- Counselling Centre is pleased to announce Beth Helsley, M.Ed. tadividual, relationship & family therapist Survivors of sexual abuse/assault 302-2030 Marine Drive North Vancouver, B.C for information or appointment call 985-2222 by vourself. Eleanor Godley hearty and appetizing. Milk or juice and a fresh salad to begin — say, she puts thawed frozen peas in her salads! — then we enjoyed the hot, sturdy soup, decorated with Parmesan and accompanied by fresh-from-the-oven baking- powder biscuits. Light as a feather, the way your mother used to mal.¢ them. And a real baked custard for dessert. Besides the enthusias~ of the young crafts person, which might carry you away, there's the possi- bility of a daily walk, weather allowing. (The centre is just a couple of blocks south of Lions Gate Hospital, all level ground around thers.) The aforemention- ed chair exercises stir up the old’ corpuscles in inclement weather. Taken al! round, it’s a place to look forward to, to make friends in and with, so what's plugging up m . the flow? THE VINTAGE YEARS jam. So to speak. Well, long-term care is respon- sible for a lot of the referrals to the centre. And a relative or com- panion could make application for an individual, I! think. But the jong-term care people are equally baffled, because Margaret Fulton’s place has so much to of- fer. The price per day is very rea- sonable indeed, especially con- sidering what it includes. There’s a nurse on duty at all times, for one thing, and every once in a while a foot specialist shows up to attend to all those corns and aching arches. There’s a full kitchen and a resident cook who, I can personally endorse, makes a mean minestrone. It was my pleasure to eat. lunch with several vivacious ladies one day last week, and it was both Maybe it sounds like too much trouble? You don’t have to get there till 9:30 a.m., after all. New people make you shy? Making a new friend takes some energy, true, but it’s a great investment. Remember that old saw about variety and the spice of life — it’s still true and still important. Keep challenging yourseif to contribute and reach out.to life around you. It’s a lot less trouble just to co- econ, not a doubt of it, but it will put you on the skids faster than anything, kiddo. You don’t want to invite that. Time to put ’er in reverse. We've wasted so much in our lives: . food, time, effort, water, talent, even words, for heaven’s sake. To waste an offer of friendship is a throwaway we really can’t afford. There’s an open house and craft sale at the centre next Monday and Tuesday, the 18th and 19th. You could nave a good look without tipping your hand, so to speak. Good chance.
