Loreena McKennitt — The Visit, Quinian Road/WEA 1991 Pristine vocal delivery and harp presented with earthy Celtic flair should make The Visit an appeal- ing release to those looking for a change of pace. This is the Manitoba native’s fourth release on her own record jabel. WEA has picked it up to give it the distributive push it deserves. The selections are suitably romantic, steeped in mist and haunting history. Prime selections include an 11-minute musical version of the Alfred Lord Tennyson poem Lady of Shallot; a passionate blue take of King Henry Vill's Greensleeves; Cymbeline, McKennitt’s music and William Shakespeare’s lyrics — “Golden lads and girls all must, as chimney sweepers, come to dust.” The Visit is a deeply evocative trip to another time. The Orb is the brainchild of former London ciub DJ Alex Paterson. A house mixmaster, he’s preduced and mixed for Primal Scream, Art of Noise and Erasure. He also did a stint with Jim Cauty before he split to form The KLF. This Ultraworld trip might be telegraphically described as a melding of Kraftwerk and Soul Ii Soul. At 70 minutes-plus, the general effect is one of music relegated to the role of home decorating ac- cessory. The concert takes the listener through a number of “earth orbits’ and on to a final TeaeerneR Tanase gana Taewabonm segment dubbed ulzraworld probe eight (a huge ever growing pulsating brain that rules from the centre of the ultraworld). The mixes, although generally mesmerizing once you let your own brain disconnect, stretch thinly as metaphorical space altitude and maximum space at- titude is attained.
