HERE ARE 10 large
paintings of pregnant

women on display at
the Women in Focus Lateral
Gallery, one for every year
that West Vancouver artist
Joy Zemel Long spent reflec-
ting on her own pregnancy.

They are tmposing figures of
featureless women with exag-
gerated bulges waiting patiently
tor the final hour of delivery, some
revealing enormous naked bloated
bellies and monumental rear ends:
others wrapped loosely in cloaks
or dresses, hand propped up
under chin, looking pensive and
self-absorbed.

The works make up a series en-
titled Women Waiting, created 10
years after the birth of Zemel
Long's daughter Frances.

The show has been organized by
