FIVE LOTS of city-owned land in
Lower Lonsdale will be set aside
for the development of non-market
housing, North Vancouver City
Council decided Monday night.

The tots, located on the 100-
block of East Second Street,
follow the city’s release of a report
entitled the Affordable Housing
Action Plan.

The report stated that the city
has received support for the idea
of selling or leasing land to private

developers or non-profit groups
for low-income housing.

The report also suggests that ‘‘a
subsidy will almost surely be nec-
essary if any city land is made
available for rental housing or
other subsidized forms of
tenures."”

A letter from the Citizens Action
Group of Lower Lonsdale sup-
ported the concept of developing
affordable housing on city-owned
land.

But the letter warned that ‘‘care
should be taken that such pro-
posals will result in affordable ac-
commodation in perpetuity, not
just for 2 few years.""

Ald. Frank Morris said the
Kiwanis Senior Citizens Homes
should get the *‘first crack’’ at the
site.

“*(They’re) the obvious and most
likely to benefit (from the land) in
conjunction with their existing
towers,”’ said Morris.

But a statement by city land
agent Colin Greer said leaving the
Market open ‘provides the flex-
ibility for various market forms
based on need, rather than
predetermining a seniors’ market
development or precluding any
non-market housing society from
the opportunity of bidding on the
site.””

City gives cash to Vaneouver agency

NORTH VANCOUVER City
Council is sending ‘‘a little bit of
money to show (their) apprecia-
tion’? to Vancouver’s Housing
Registry for their assistance during
the city’s housing crisis, Ald. Bar-
bara Sharp said Monday night.

The $200 grant was provided to
support the Vancouver agency
because the North Shore does not
currently have a housing registry.

Sharp said the reason the North
Shore lacked a housing registry

as ‘‘mostly because no vacancies
exist.””

And a report by city social
planner Chery! Kathler said ‘‘that
a development of a housing regis-
try (would) be withheld until the
review of illegal suites policy is
completed.”

City staff will also be assisting
the local community ‘‘in develop-
ing a limited number of self-help

skills raining workshops for North
Vancouver City tenants in con-
junction with North and West
Vancouver districts,’ according to
Kathler.

Sharp sponsored the workshops,
saying they provided ‘‘some mech-
anism for tenants to gain skills fcr
