Point Grey Store NEWS photo: Mike Wakefield BRIDGE HOUSE manager Lutz Wolff prepares to toast his restaurant’s many patrons. The North Vancouver restaurant across from the world-famous Capilano Suspension Bridge remains one of the North Shore’s better dining locales. Sauces disappoint From page 25 My selection featured two four-ounce steaks and two ac- companying sauces: bernaise and pepper, It also came with roast potatoes, a baked tomato-half topped with Parmesan cheese and a melange of stir-fried vegetables. The meat was expertly prepared and the sauces provided a good contrast for the meat, but the car- rots, zucchini and red cabbage in the vegetable stir-fry were over- cooked. Meanwhile over in the fondue section: A pot of boiling oil arrived bolstered with the traditional blue flicker of canned heat. Dishes oi raw meat, Carrots, mushrooms, red and green peppers and zuc- chini awaited immersion. My wife was outfitted with a quiver of fondue forks. She looked like an Amazon Indian setting out ona monkey hunt, and began en- thusiastically spearing and cooking food. While it was an interesting con- cept, the meal had several drawbacks. The meat was cut in huge lumps that took a lot of fonduing. While the seasonal vegetables were reasonably colorful, the novelty of eating fondued everything soon lost its attraction, And the three sauces provided — curry, herb and mayonnaise — were too similar to add much in- terest to the meal. All three were cream or mayon- naise-based and lacked the viiality needed to add life to a meal prepared using a single cooking method — better to have included a soya and ginger sauce or one with at least a contrasting texture or flavor, In addition, the fondue pot’s canned heat ran out halfway through my witfe’s meal, which had to be interrupted for refuell- ing. For dessert, we went for the Bananas Faster ($11 for two). The preparation of the dish can, in the right hands, be impressive. The bananas, fried in butter and sugar, were tlambed tableside in rhum, banana liqueur and cognac. They were served with a topping of chocolate ice cream. Buta deluge of liquid reduced the dish to a tepid banana soup — disappointing for the price. Overall our meal was above average, but | couldn't help feeling that the Sunday Bridge House crew was not really ready for the size of crowd it was serving the night we visited and perhaps would have preferred to be elsewhere. ieee aaa te eh allan atl eA Att al lata iit ddivedtctel Y / 10 days only From January 21 to 31, 1990, the Tandy 1000 TL/2 computer is on sale for 1/2 price.
