Post-adoption program helps N. Shore families

THE POST-Adoption Counselling
Program at the North Shore Fami-
ly Services Society offers education
and support groups for adoptive
families.

“The adoption field is now un-
folding new concepts, theories and
ideas that are needing to he shared

with adoptive families in the
1980s,’ says Lee Crawford, coor-
dinator of the post-adoption pro-
gram. ‘‘The field is gaining interest
and recognition, and is challenging
traditional values and beliefs that
were commonly held in the early
and middle part of this century.

‘‘Adoption today is different
and families have different needs.
Parents want to know why adop-
tion trends are changing, what
unique needs adoptive children
have, what special parenting skills
parents should be aware of and
how to share with other adoptive

parents. Post-adoption groups
provide an opportunity to address
key concerns, give and receive

support and share in group experi-
ences in a relaxed setting,”’
Crawford says.

North Shore Family Services
also provides individual, couple
and family counselling in this
post-adoplive program.

After-adoption groups include
those for children, teens and
parents. New groups will start up
in January. Call Crawford at
988-5281 to register.
