Western society, he maintains, in- terferes with the “‘intelligences of the heart’? and its natural un- folding in the child and, later, in the adult. To foster this type of intelligence we must help children develop their inner world, by having them respond to words with their own internal images, he maintains. Television, says Pearce, bypasses the brain’s ability to create an in- ternal image, substituting instead, “‘svathetic counterfeit images.’’ He explains that, for this reason, the content on television has nothing to do with the damage it does.
