aid of Dreams hits a homer Field. of Dreams ***% (Universal) Rated General (at the Oakridge Cinema) IOWA. ‘ABOUT the only thing that springs readily to mind is ... well, actually, | nothing comes to mind. But now, this film offers the in- triguing notion that lowa has a portal to Paradise. While standing in his cornfield one sunny day, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a voice whisper, “Build it and he will come.” A vision indicates that if he builds a basebalt park in the middle of his fieid, a White Sox legend, dead for nearly 40 years, will return. A gut instinct tells him he shouldn’t quibble with primal forces of nature. His wife, Anne (Amy Madigan}, with one worried eye on the bank book, helps plow under a much- needed crop and put up bleach- ers, while neighbors slowly shake their heads. _After a year passes, the only visit get is from their creditors. gy Ray refuses to sell. He knows ‘someone’ is coming. One spring evening, “Shoeless” Joe jackson (Ray Liotta) steps out of the cornfield in uniform and in all his prime. Look- ing as incredulous as Ray, he wonders if this is heaven. “‘No,”’ Ray replies, “It’s lowa.”’ Other departed baseball greats join Joe as time passes, drawn by those perfect sunny days and a chance to play the game for which TIM BELL film reviewer they lived. You’d think that Ray would be content, even if he and his family are the only ones who are able to see this miracle. But the little vuice starts up - again. ‘‘Ease his pain.” Still not one to quibble, the farmer heads out to round up an ex-writer, Terence Mann (James Ear! Jones) living in Boston, and, from Min- nesota, a deceased humanitarian, Doc Graham. They both have ties to baseball, and Ray’s infield to the Twilight Zone offers some an- swers. Burning, Now hold on there, | hear you saying. Isn’t that just a tad corny? No, not even close. The film’s humor and gentleness are well balanced with scenes of genuine sorrow. The characters are elo- quent in describing their regrets and passions, but are never over the top or waliowing in sentimen- tality. Occasionally, the film strays into dangerously hokey scenes, such as one with Anne battling a car- toonish book-burner at the PTA,. but director/writer Phil Alden Robinson always brings it back on track. With excellent performances from Costner, Lancaster and jones, Field of Dreams hits a homer.
