Cues naa rata Ree a ay i is aaa ei; et Be spoetes 7 - Sunday, April 2, 1989 - North Shore News Solution to West Van's [REARING BRQRTEMS?| burning issue proposed Dear Editor: We understand that very soon the West Vancouver District Council will again. be faced with the thorny problem'of- bonfires — to burn or not to burn. A 1987/88 public opinion poll showed that 75 per cent of West Van residents are in favor of out- side burning. So, if council is to be democratic, it must of course ac- commodate the wishes of the ma- jority. However, the present bylaw which restricts burning to eight days in April and October leaves much to be desired. By concen- trating all burning on a few brief weekends smoke really does become a problem, especially for those with respiratory ailments. We believe that if burning were allowed over a much wider period of time smoke concentration would be dramatically reduced. We would suggest any dry day from October 1 to April 30, Sun- days excepted. : We have a further concern. Some of those who wish to ban outside burning have made no secret of the fact that this would simply be stage one in their cam- paign. Stage two would be the outlawing of household hearth fires. No more sitting around a blazing log-fire on a cold winter evening. Another point. Garbage disposal is a world-wide issue, and it is proving difficult here too. Asking the municipality to remove our in- flammable garden refuse would only compound the problem. Maybe we should think of our pocketbooks too. If outside burn- ing is banned, then the council has made it clear that more money will be required for garden refuse disposal. So up would go our taxes. We believe it is time for the “silent, majority’? to speak up. Dor.’t allow council to be swayed by the vociferous 25 per cent mi- nority. Please write to the mayor and council and let them know your views now. Whatever you do, try to be at that council meeting when this issue is called. If our burning privileges are stopped we many never regain them. Van mother. How much more truthful if this headline had read: Owner encourages Pitt Bull to attack N. Van mother. My opinion is anyone who en- courages his dog, of any breed, to attack ahother ‘is a person suf- fering from a severe inferiority complex, having to bolster his ego by the fact that he has a dog who can, and will, attack humans and other dogs. My husband was a practising veterinarian in the Lower Mainland for over 50 years. For many of thpse years L assisted him. In. my opinion, Pitt Bulls are no more viojent than any other breed. A dog is not born to be a killer, it is taught by man. Teach a dog as you would a child to respect humans and other animals and it will. I own a Doberman named Rocky (another breed much ma- ligned by the media). Many people who walk the power line or Capilano Canyon trails know him and know he loves everycne. However, if the occasion ever arose whereby he had to defend me, he would do so, with his life if necessary. You do not have to train your dog to protect you or Mailbox policy WHEN SENDING a letter to the editor, be sure to include your name, writtea legibly, your full address and your tele- phone number.
